Importance of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is celebrated as great honour to our teachers, who remove the darkness from our minds. They have a special place in the lives of their followers since ancient times. An age-old Sanskrit phrase ‘Mata Pitah Guru Daivam’, says that the first place reserves for the mother, second for the father, third for Guru and forth for God. Thus, teachers have given a higher place than Gods in Hindu tradition.
Tradition, food and culture
Many people fast during the day, refraining to eat salt, rice, heavy foods such as non-vegetarian dishes and other meals made of cereals. Only eating yoghurt or fruits is allowed. They break their fast after performing puja in the evening. Guru Purnima has the importance of Vishnu puja attached to it. ‘Vishnu Sahatranam’ also known as the thousand names of Lord Vishnu should be recited on this day.
Guru among Hindu considers as a God. On this day, people wake up early and pray to God on this auspicious occasion and seek his blessings. They also visit the Gurus for their blessings since it’s a day in respect of the gurus.
